Good, but has some glitches, 26 Oct 2008

I bought this for my son’s 6th birthday. He loves it and it is educational but also so much fun. However, I find that ever other time he turns it on the touch screen stops working, requiring me to recalibrate it. OK, so this only takes a minute, but is frustrating for him and me. More annoyingly, the online connection facility that it boasts does not seem to be working for me. I’ve followed all Leapfrogs instructions to the letter, but my son’s rewards and saved pictures are not appearing on his profile’s home page. I am currently in contact with their support team about this, so I’ll hopefully get it sorted soon?!

Having said all this, he does love it and would be on it all the time if I didn’t stop him!

OK, time for an update. Leapfrog support helped to get the SD card formatted. The calibration problem just seemed to sort itself! I hasn’t needed recalibrating for weeks now. And the Leapfrog Connect online is now up and running. Yipee! We are all happy now. Great learning toy.

We have a new leapster 2 for my four year old who is really loving it. But we had only been using it a few hours and when we turned it off for lunch ( 15mins!) the screen was completely unresponsive when we tried to switch it back on just like the reviewer below. I remember reading this review before purchase and got the manual out and recalibrated the screen and it is working for now. Not impressed though. It is not something a child can do and it is a toy that you want them to pick up and be free to use without an adult having to “fix” it every time.

News flash !!!….as an update… i finally gave in and took it back to ELC. Got another from Toys r us and it works perfectly. It is a good game for a four year old in the car and when working properly as this one is can be fun. The star wars clone wars game is good for basic maths for 5-6 year old but with lots of fun and blasting too.

I too bought this for my 7 year old as she loves hello kitty. It feels cheap and very lightweight. There are no labels on the face to indicate where the buttons are once you remove the protective cover. The included instructions are useless, it is not intuative to use. Music and pictures were easy to load, navigating round folders and back involved alot of trial and error. I gave up trying to load a film.

We bought it for our daughter as she likes HK, but the quality is poor, the user interface (buttons/menus) is poor, etc. I put music (mp3) and a movie (mp4) on it and it doesn’t even see the movie. There is no shuffle play. Need I go on? Do not buy this piece of cheap plastic. Spend your money on something better (anything else basically)!!!

bought for my 7yr old daughter as a birthday present. it does looks great, if a bit cheap looking, but she loves hello kitty and is so far using it for listening to stories. however it has caused tears as its tricky to press the right part of the kitty face to navigate around the thing. it would be better with buttons and some labelling on them so you know what each thing does instead of trying to remember and slightly missing the correct part of the face anyway. to me it also seems counter intuitive after years of mobile phone use, but i guess you get use to it. it was easy enough to download pictures and music onto although instructions enc. are very lacking. one more thing, i cant be doing with the supplied ear plug type headphones, get some better ones if you like your ears.

OK, many will complain that there are only 17 pieces of puzzle but still, this is not Technic…and for the price you can’t get 100 pieces.
